The techniques used for inlaying and decorating pool cues/snooker cues fall into several main categories: wood splicing, surface inlaying, and metal/conch inlaying.
Below is a detailed introduction to these techniques.
Wood splicing technique (Splicing / Points)
It is not applied to the surface; instead, hardwoods of different colors (such as ebony, rosewood, and cocoa wood) are physically embedded at the back of the rod before it is rounded off – this constitutes a structural type of decoration.
• Full Splice (full stitching): In this method, the wooden strips that make up the shaft run throughout its entire length; it is a complex process that results in high costs, and it is commonly used in handmade snooker sticks of British style.
• Half Splice (half-splicing/4-point style): A V-shaped or diamond-shaped groove is machined at the joint between the front and rear sections; hardwood pieces and stained wood veneers are inserted there, after which the entire piece is rounded off. This style is commonly used in American-style nine-ball cues.
• Multi-color Veneer interlayer: Colored wood strips with a thickness of 0.5–1 mm are inserted into the joints, creating colored lines that add a sense of depth.

• Design and grooving: CAD drafting → CNC machining or manual milling on the rod to create grooves that match the inserts perfectly (the tolerance is usually in the range of 0.01–0.05mm).

• Embedded components preparation: Shells, wood slices, and metal are cut according to the design; the edges are manually refined to remove burrs so that they fit perfectly against the walls of the groove.

• Gluing and embedding: Use specialized woodworking glue or cyanoacrylate glue for embedding, then apply pressure to facilitate curing.
• Turning/milling/polishing: The insert is slightly above the surface; it is then ground step by step using a lathe or by hand with sandpaper of grits from 120 to 600+ until it is completely level with the wood surface, after which it is painted or coated with beeswax.
Classification of process grades
Decal: It consists merely of a sticker with a gloss finish; it is not truly inlaid, so it is inexpensive but lacks a three dimensional appearance.
• CNC Inlay: Used for the mass production of mid-to-high-end rods, offering high precision and uniform patterns.
•Handmade/Custom Inlay: Artisans carefully shape and fit each piece together to create extremely complex patterns; it has the highest collectible value but requires a great deal of time. The depth and area of the embedment must be strictly controlled; excessive depth or a large embedding area may weaken the strength of the shaft, alter its center of gravity, and affect the way force is transmitted.
